While thinking that I've made quite a bit of progress, I also see some other pictures of dungeon monsters and topographical notes. It seems that there are fallen board traps that trigger when you get close to them, and dungeon monsters that take advantage of them to attack you. To be honest, I'm thankful for these warnings. 結局“狂気の赫眼”とは遭遇する事なく時間は過ぎ、俺達は≪地宮の地下道≫の入り口に到着した。
入り口は巨人でもゆったり入れるほど広く、門があるわけでもない巨大な洞窟そのものだった。天罰山脈の一角にポッカリと開き、俺が探知できる範囲よりも深く深く地下へと伸びている。
入ってみると、地下なので暗いかと思ったがそうではなかった。
洞窟の壁に点在しながら自生する光苔――これも古代種なのか、外のよりも強く発光している――によって少し薄暗いかな、と感じる程度には視界は確保されている。
しかし暗い部分はどうしてもあり、そういった部分は光がある分より暗くなっていた。
床は予想に反して凹凸が少なく、馬車などでも問題なく移動できるだろう。他の有力種族との交易の為に整備したらしいので、地下道を造った地龍達がその辺りも整備しているのかもしれない。
骸骨大百足に乗ったままでも問題なさそうだったのでそのまま進む。
洞窟なので空気はヒヤリと冷え、空気も外とは違っていた。
しばらくは何事もなかったが、地下道は整備されていると言っても危険はある。
進んで行くと、水の音が聞こえてくる。
最初は遠かったそれも進むと次第に激しさを増し、さらに進むと轟音となった頃には開けた空間に出た。
そこはまるで水によって削り取られたように滑らかな岩肌に変わり、横に広かった足場はグッと狭まって馬車二台が横に並ぶ程度しかない。
空間自体は巨人数人が暴れられる程度あるかもしれないが、足場のすぐ傍は数十メートルほどの高さのある崖であり、崖下には大量の地下水が流れていた。
落ちればあっという間に飲み込まれるだろう水量があり、地下水は更に地下へと流れている。
音も反響して轟々と響き、空気は飛沫によって湿り気を帯び、全身で水の力強さを感じられた。
狭い足場に気を付けながら進むと再び洞窟となり、今度は蝙蝠型のダンジョンモンスターである“
ヴォーパルバットは猫ほどの大きさながら、音も無く獲物に迫り、人体を紙のように切り裂く刃翼で首を切り落とす暗殺者である。
単体でも恐ろしく、それが今回は数十匹ほど。
暗闇の中から一斉に襲い掛かられたが、まあ事前に察知していたので問題なく対処できた。
下処理し、軽く丸焼きにした肉を摘まみに進む。刃翼はパリパリと煎餅みたいな感じがしたので、ゴブリン時代を何となく思い出す。
基本的には緩やかに、時折急な勾配となりながら地下へ地下へと進む道。
道中では他にも色が違う地層を見る事が出来たり、あるいは水晶で構築された神殿のような場所を巡る事が出来た。
その他にも危険だったり楽しい事が色々あったが、普段は見る事の出来ない地下世界を楽しみながら進んで行けたのは行幸だっただろう。
閉塞感たっぷりの詰まらない地下道を進むのは精神的に応える筈だから。
嫌々ではなく楽しみながら進めた事にホッとしつつ、今日だけではまだ目的地まで到着できなかったが、地下道の一画に休憩所として設けられているらしい開けた空間で一泊する事にした。
ここの岩壁には色んな絵が描かれている。
恐らく蛇行しつつも下に向かっている絵は地図だろう。地上からこここまでの道のりが、【
結構進んだなと思いつつ、その他にも何やらダンジョンモンスターや地形的な注意点らしき絵も確認する。
近づいただけで発動する落盤トラップや、それに乗じて襲ってくるダンジョンモンスターが居るらしい。
こういった警告は正直有難い。
また休憩所は地下ながらも空気の流れは十分あるのか巨人でも暖が取れそうなほど大きな焚火をした形跡がある。
交易に向かう商人達もよく利用するらしく、トイレみたいな場所もあった。
ありがたく使わせてもらう事にして、焚火をして暖をとりつつ、地下のヒヤリとする空気で飲む酒と辛い肉料理。
冷暖の差がよく分かるこれはこれで、中々美味いものである。
飯を喰った後は少し雑談して、明日に備えて寝床につく。
身体が冷えすぎてもいけないので、暖かい高級羽毛寝袋に包まった。
