Variants are types of Monsters in the series that have a special ability called a divine protection or blessing. The word variant is used for monsters and not for humans. The katakana is バリアント directly translating to variant. However, the kanji is 亜種 which directly tranlates to subspecies. This can cause some cunfusion and as such, unlike other forms, the katakana is more often used, espcially in the official manga and the game.
Overview[]
Variants are blessed with a divine protection of Gods and/or Demigods which, depending on the divine being that gave the blessing, is capable of giving the Monsters special skills or improved defense against a certain element. The divine protection actually appears as an ability and manifests in the being physically as a change in appearance.
Monsters usually become variants upon ranking up, after clearing certain conditions, though occasionally, if a parent of theirs has proven to be exceptional, they have a higher chance of being born as a variant.
Physically, their most notable difference from a normal monster of the same kind would be differently colored skin, which is a sign of the blessing. The deeper the color from the blessing, the higher the rank of the god.

According to the author, when variants get stronger, they become able to be compared with the various ranks of heroes and their races recieve titles as such. These are names according with their race and strength. Currently there are some characters that have managed to achieve these forms given names higher than variant or according to their race. However, to do so, numerous difficult conditions have to be met. It is unclear whether you must be a variant to have some of these names.
